Description

The Mnweni Circuit Hike – A Drakensberg Favourite

Pick-up from Johannesburg or Durban before 12:00 PM, with an estimated travel time of 4 hours to the Mnweni Cultural Centre.

The Mnweni Circuit remains one of my absolute favorite routes in the Drakensberg. Typically, we begin our journey with an overnight stay at the Mnweni Cultural Centre, where we enjoy a traditional braai surrounded by the majestic mountain landscape. Vehicles are safely parked at the Centre, and from there, we take a transfer to the end of the dirt road — the starting point of our hike through one of the most picturesque valleys in the entire Drakensberg range.

In spring, the valley bursts into color with breathtaking wildflowers. As we follow the trail, we cross the Ntonjelana River multiple times, offering opportunities for a refreshing dip in natural pools. Lunch is enjoyed beside a small grove of Protea trees. Approximately two hours after lunch, we arrive at our first campsite — the ‘Station’ beneath Rockeries Pass. Towering cliffs surround us, with Rockeries Pass on one side and Nguzu Pass on the other. Overhead, Cape vultures glide effortlessly — a remarkable sight with one of the largest colonies located just above us.

Day 2

Takes us up the formidable Rockeries Pass. Although just 3 km in distance, it involves a steep ascent from 2,200m to 2,950m above sea level. We reach the summit in time for lunch, with the nearby Orange (Senqu) River inviting exploration. A gentle one-hour walk leads us to our next camp, perched near another spectacular Cape vulture colony with panoramic views of the Mnweni Valley far below.

This section is, without doubt, one of the most awe-inspiring locations in the world — a perfect blend of raw nature, stillness, and dramatic scenery.

Day 3

Sees us traversing the escarpment behind the Saddle, stopping for lunch at the scenic “Alice’s Restaurant.” From here, the views stretch from the iconic Devil’s Tooth near the Amphitheatre all the way to Cathkin Peak near Champagne Castle. Along the route, there’s a beautiful natural pool — perfect for a quick swim. We then descend Ntonjelana Pass to make camp once more by a pristine mountain stream.

On Day 4

We complete the circuit with a short and pleasant walk back to the valley floor, where our vehicles await at the Cultural Centre.

You’ve just completed the unforgettable Mnweni Circuit — a Northern Drakensberg gem and home to our amazing Zulu porters.
