Description

Sentinel to Cathedral Peak: 6 Day Hike

Embark on an unforgettable hiking adventure through the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg, South Africa’s grandest and most iconic mountain range. Perfect for passionate hikers, this untamed wilderness offers dramatic landscapes that are rugged, remote, and breathtakingly beautiful. The Northern Drakensberg Traverse, hailed by National Geographic as one of the world’s top 10 hikes, lives up to its reputation with awe-inspiring scenery and challenging terrain. Commonly known as the Mini Traverse, this route covers the first five days of the renowned Grand Traverse and features some of the Drakensberg’s most celebrated landmarks, including the Amphitheatre, Tugela Falls, and Madonna and Her Worshippers. It’s a truly essential experience for any mountain enthusiast.

We certainly get to see some of the best mountain scenery South Africa has to offer.

Pick-up in Durban or Johannesburg before 12:00 PM, with an estimated travel time of 3 hours to the camping destination.

The first night is spent camping atop the iconic Amphitheatre, right beside the world’s tallest waterfall—Tugela Falls—at an elevation of 2,950 meters above sea level. From this vantage point, the views as the falls cascade down the massive cliff face are truly unforgettable. Although the day’s hike covers only 8 km, it can take up to four hours, allowing ample time to soak in the scenery rather than rush. The evening is capped off with a well-deserved traditional braai, available at R1200.00 per person.

Over the next few days, we wander along the escarpment edge where the views are best.

The following two days offer a similar hiking experience, with each day covering approximately 14 km and taking up to 7 hours to complete. The route winds through breathtaking mountain landscapes, showcasing the raw beauty of the Drakensberg. By day three, we reach one of my favorite spots—perched above Rockeries Pass in the Mnweni region, home to all of my porters. It’s a special place with a deep personal connection and remarkable views.

They love to show off their home to visitors.

We set up camp near an impressive Cape Vulture colony—an extraordinary sight and a true highlight of the journey. After taking time to observe these majestic birds in flight, we continue our trek behind the towering Saddle, where a refreshing swim in a crystal-clear mountain stream awaits. Lunch today is particularly memorable, enjoyed against one of the most breathtaking backdrops in the Drakensberg—a perfect spot to relax and recharge.

Day 4 is slightly shorter with 11km done and arriving at our camp by 2pm.

Once we arrive, it’s time to unwind with a warm cup of tea while enjoying the tranquil sounds of the Kwakwatsi River flowing past our campsite. The next morning, after breakfast at the charming “Mug and Bowl” camp kitchen, we begin our descent down the Mlambonja Pass. We pause for lunch along the contour path, having dropped from 3,000 meters to 2,000 meters—where the noticeable increase in oxygen gives you a real boost of energy. The afternoon hike takes us along the contour path, with the towering cliffs now rising dramatically above us.

It is incredible to think we were just up there.

After about 2 km, we reach our campsite nestled below the striking formations of the Column and Pyramid. Although the day’s hike covers only 7 km, it can take up to 6 hours as we descend more than 1,000 meters in elevation. It’s a steady, scenic journey where we take our time—because, as they say, there’s no need to rush in Africa.

Day 6 is a bit sad as we finish at the Cathedral Peak hotel (Optional-price not included in package). This day takes 3 hours and is 9km long. And that is the end of the memorable Sentinel to Cathedral Northern Drakensberg traverse hike.
